3 Free Grid WordPress themes + inspiration & resources

Somewhere around a year ago, I wrote a post regarding the new trend in grid based designs. Well indeed the trend is getting popular now and is spotted by other website too like InspiredMag. I really like this design style because the layout is well organized and professional looking too.

Here I found three Free unique WordPress themes that utilizes grid as the main feel. The themes are really cool in my opinion and I would like to try it out somewhere in the future. Is it just me or what the grid based designs somehow concentrated in grayscale color?

In 2007, I posted a blog post about 4 Japan web design galleries that worth visiting to introduce web design showcase sites that is from Japan which showcases nice Japanese web designs. Since then, I found more Japan web galleries and would like to add them up to the list.

In my opinion, Japanese websites are nice, clean and functional. I think it’s good to study how they construct the website, dealing with white spaces and typography treatment. Although we can see that there is certain cliches in them but I think perhaps for Japanese, those format are the most functional to them? As a designer we always wanted to be creative and think out of the box and breaking the grid. But in my opinion getting boxy in design is actually quite nice and pretty too. Boxy designs give me a feeling of professional, clean, and systematic. With boxes and standard grid, viewers eye can be easily guided which makes surfing website a pleasure experience.

Another Bookmarks presents Bookmark of the year 2008

Another Bookmark, a flash based shared bookmark site by web creators for inspiration and research, had nominated the best 14 sites that are outstanding and unforgettable to compete to become the Bookmark Of The Year 2008. You can go to the site and vote for your favorite site to claim the title.

There are quite a few sites that are really well done and most of them are Flash based. Below are some of the nominated sites that I like. However, my vote goes to FONTPARK 2.0, because I visited the site before and it is really an addictive site to play with. Plus I also wrote about this site before too. So, which site you vote?

Unit PNG Fix is the best IE6 png hack out there

As web designers knew that Internet Explorer 6 does not support transparent PNG image files. It is really driving me crazy because recently I designed a site that requires heavy usage of transparent PNG images in background attributes. I had tried numerous png hacks available out there and they just couldn’t fully solve the problem. But finally I found the best solution – Unit PNG Fix.

Unit PNG Fix is lightweight and the response are quick. Basically, this fix able to find the PNG images and trick IE6 to display the transparencies. Big thanks to the team because I really want the web design to look as close to other modern browsers like Firefox, Safari etc in IE6, as it is still has a lot of users using it. Well, I really hope that they can switch to a better browser thou.

IE Death March

A little off topic, but still related to IE 6. Many designers hate IE 6, not only it does not support PNG transparency mentioned above, it is also not a web standard browser and it’s OLD. Many campaign springs out notably Save The Developers to encourage people to use a more modern browser. Well now there is IE Death March, to hope that people to drop the support for IE 6 by March 2009.

I think it’s a good move. I really hope that this web world is a happy world without IE 6.

Before Javascript, websites are pretty much static where the whole page refreshes and go to another page. If you want to have some little animations and the information loads within the same page, you will need flash to do. But now with Ajax and powerful Javascript framework like Jquery, Mootools, Script.aculo.us and more, websites can become “flash-like”.

From simple button rollover animation to complex like sliding tab content, Javascript can perform what Flash can do. With Javascript, the visitors interaction with the website become more friendly and interesting, and sometimes will giving “wow” effect too. Recently I spotted a few websites that powered by Javascript and looks really awesome. HTML websites now are no longer static.

Colorful website designs

Color is one of the critical aspect in any design field. Different color and give different feeling and meaning and different color combination can give different mood to the viewer too. Great selection of color and make the design memorable, while bad selection of color can bring misconception and disaster to the outcome. So for me, color is a very deep discipline and cannot take it for granted. But today I’m going to show you a selections of colorful websites that displays great example of color usage yet harmony in outcome.

Colorful does not just restrict to bright and cheerful color, for me even combination of cold colors can be considered as colorful too. To create colorful designs, one can use high contrast colors or complementary color to bring out the color sharpness, or by using analogous colors to create a more harmonic tone of colors. Besides, tints, shades, gradient, textures richness also can bring out the sense of color variety too. Ok, enough talking, now let the do the talking instead.

Coffee drinking culture is certainly very popular in the world, Malaysia is no exception too. Coffee houses sprung up in many places and everyone just love to get a cup of coffee when on and off working hour. Perhaps coffee culture gave certain kind of lifestyle definition or maybe the designer loves to drink coffee very much, so they decided to put a cup of coffee on the web design.

It’s a very unique trend in web design as, many examples shown below they not only show coffee but working tools and gadgets as well, for example laptop, drawing tablet, media player and more. This is a way to show the site owner’s personality, and his desire to expand his personal space to web, and to get personal with visitors too. And another similarity is, the site designs also often feature wood texture background too.

Inspired By Nature: Websites with water

Certainly water plays a vital role in our normal daily life, we simply can’t live without it. Water keeps us fresh and healthy. Plus, water also giving a sense of serenity and symbols of live. Recently, I saw some site designs also incorporating the water elements into the design, which I think is really unique and refreshing.

This marks the fourth edition of the Inspired By Nature series in this blog. Well, I found this water series is very interesting and it’s quite hard to find too. Many sites using water element as background, sidebar elements or simply the whole site was full with water. As you might had guess, the websites with water are majority based on blue color scheme, maybe because of the sea. End of talking, so please have a look the 10 beautiful sites with plenty of water!

Design Disease

The latest site refresh by the pro design team Design Disease. All I can say is the design is just WOW. Daring color scheme and the wavy shapes are really breaking the boxy feels of web design. Brilliant design!

Stylized Web

From the previous black and white, Stylized Web now also featuring water inspired design like Design Disease but softer color scheme. Notice that the layers of colors of the sky, sea, and ground to separate out the contents. Brilliant idea!

This is an online portfolio of Luke Larsen, and it looks like a huge aquarium tank! This fishes are really making this site to live. Clean and nice, I like it. Notice the page navigation too.

Iceberg

Ice is also consider as water too. So this site is utilizing the sea surface and the natural iceberg which giving a sense of chilling cold!

Icebrrg

Certainly don’t mix up this one with the one above. Unlike Iceberg, Icebrrg’s design was beneath the sea with the sun lights shines through the water.

This is a really unique website design. The designer using the river to depict the sidebar.

Kulturbanause

Probably the most extraordinary blog design I ever seen. Kulturbanause also featuring water element like the waterfall, which falls from the top of the page to the bottom. Really awesome!

I am very fascinating about this site intro flash movie. The dancing color in the water is very special and worth a look!

Honda – Edit Screen

It’s summer time! What a cheerful site design. In this site you can make your own screensaver with a self customized bubble character (cute!) and download for own use. It’s a full flash site and the color is really bright and cheerful!

Japan is a country that has a very rich and unique styles in designs and culture that balance between usability and aesthetic, modern and traditional. I really like the traditional Japanese styles of designs, patterns, and colors which implemented into modern living lifestyle. Well, web design is no exceptions too.

Recently, i came across this great blog with the article about amazing Japanese style web designs which separated into part one and part two. Japanese style is pronounce as “wafuu (和風)” in Japanese.
