3D tool in Illustrator has been existed for some time and it is very useful to create simple 3D models and text effects easily. In this tutorial, I will show you how you can utilise the 3D’s wireframe option to create a unique yet eye catchy text effect.

What you need here is an Adobe Illustrator version that comes with 3D tools. This tutorial is really easy to do and it’s really suitable for beginners who wants to learn more about Illustrator. Please continue reading to follow the step by step tutorial!

Step 1

Launch your Illustrator and create a new canvas of any size. I’m using Adobe Illustrator CS5 for this tutorial. Select the Type Tool, type a word with fonts of your choice. Here I’m using a bold sans-serif font that gives a better outcome.

Step 1

Step 2

By selecting the word you created in Step 1, now go to Effect > 3D > and select the Extrude & Bevel. The Extrude & Bevel window prompts out.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, look at the screenshot below and check out the options. The most important thing is to select the “Surface” option to Wireframe.

Step 3

Step 4

Tada, there you have it. You had just wireframed your text. The text is still editable at this moment.

Step 4

Final Step

You can further enhance the 3D effect and make it even outstanding by using the original text with different colors. You can also go crazy by adding more stuff like halftones to make it funky. You can download the free halftone vectors here.

Step 5

This is it! Hope you find this tutorial useful and perhaps you can use this cool effect for your next flyer or poster project!
