10 Newspaper & Magazine Websites with good and usable front page design

10 Newspaper amp; Magazine Websites with good and usable design

Because currently I worked in a newspaper company, I have the opportunities to redesign the online version of their newspaper. I have not done any newspaper website design before and this is a great challenge for me. I always think that it is hard to create designs that has large amount of content and the flexibility of the layout, as well as how to make it usable to readers.

From my research, online version of Newspaper or magazine must have a layout that allow people to quick scan the latest news and quickly know the news that matters the most of the particular day. To support this, we can use white space, typography, colors etc to achieve this result. Besides that, also have to think of how to make space for advertising without taking too much attention away from the main content. Below are the examples of newspaper and magazine websites with good and usable front page design.

Gulf News

Gulf News front page is clean and well organized with eye-soothing color scheme. It has a 3 column grid that has same width that makes the layout balance.

Foreign Affairs

Foreign Affairs has a clean front page as well. Although I think that the body text a little small to my taste, the type treatment of this site is really nicely done.

Reuters

Reuters, a news site that focuses on Business and Financial news, has a neutral and professional look. I like the way they put the stock markets indices at the top bar, allow quick glance for readers. There is also a news ticker for quick look to today’s latest news. Overall the layout is really neat.

IHNED

Although I don’t know about Czech language, but I like the front page. The top news as major attraction with larger space given, and “news in picture” as alternative content. The news carousel at bottom that scrolls left and right prevent the layout from getting to long.

The Swish Life

I like the way The Swish Life gives huge space for featured news. The huge navigation bar on top (although I think is a little too big) makes easier for section navigation. I also noticed each articles has cool drop cap at the first letter.
